SOC 425 - Food, Power, and Agriculture


4 credits
Examines the structure of agriculture and food production in the United States and internationally. The first part of the course focuses on the history of agriculture in the United States, the concentration of agribusiness in the United States and overseas and the importance of the United States Farm Bill and the Agreement on Agriculture of the World Trade Organization. The last part of the course considers local alternatives to concentrated agriculture, including local farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture, and fairly traded agricultural products. Prerequisite(s): SOC 204  and one additional upper division sociology course or permission of instructor.
