ED 431 - Teaching English Learners

Introduces future educators to the knowledge, skills, attitudes and resources necessary to meet the needs of English learners in mainstream classrooms. Topics include overview of current theories of Second Language Acquisition, background on laws and historical foundations of Bilingual/ESOL programs, identification of types of Bilingual/ESOL programs in Oregon, recognition of the value of families’ native languages and cultures, and design of lessons with effective strategies for English learners. Instructor integrates experiences from the field with the content of the course. Prerequisite(s): ED 309 (Practicum: Teaching English Learners) or concurrent enrollment. Restricted to juniors or seniors or with instructor approval.
