The faculty of Language, Literature, and Philosophy represent three academic programs: Foreign Languages and Literatures Program  , English and Writing Program  , and Philosophy Program  . While advocating the virtues of interdisciplinary study, the department is committed to promoting the integrity of individual disciplines.

The Department of Language, Literature, and Philosophy offers majors in literary studies, English education, creative writing, and language and culture, with options in Spanish or French. The department offers minors in creative writing, English education, literary studies, professional writing, philosophy, rhetoric and reason, French, Spanish, and German. At the graduate level, the department also offers a Summer Language Institute (SLI) through the SOU Center for Language Studies. The department also hosts the Oregon Writing Project (OWP) Summer Institute, a major component of SOU’s collaborative work with the National Writing Project.
