Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Music Program

The Elementary General Music Concentration is intended for students who want to teach elementary general music and pursue Elementary Education as a double major. Core courses for the major in Elementary Education are listed below. To complete music credits for the degree, students will take the 56 non-elective credits required for the BA/BS degree (Music Core) and the 7 credits listed in the Elementary General Music concentration, bringing their total to 63 music credits. In addition, students must pass MUS 300 . Having completed this double major, students preparing to enter the teaching profession as elementary general music teachers and elementary classroom teachers will complete two endorsement areas in the MAT program, enabling employment as an elementary music teacher, an elementary classroom teacher, or a combination of both.

In addition to University Studies Requirements and Music Major non-elective Core Courses, students who wish to complete the Elementary General Music Concentration must take the following music courses:

(56 credits)

MAT Program: Two-Year program recommended

Once admitted to the two-year MAT program, students will be able to take classes with the early childhood/elementary cohort focusing on K-6 content knowledge and pedagogy/methods classes. With this strong undergraduate double major in both Music and Education, it is proposed that the students will be expected to teach three work samples in their student teaching, including the first work sample in music in the fall term (half-day student teaching), and second work sample for K-3 primary level (half-day student teaching), and/or third work sample for 3rd-6th upper elementary grades level (full-time student teaching) during the regular academic year.
