Distance Learning

SOU’s online programs provide students the flexibility of completing coursework outside the traditional classroom setting. Courses follow the academic term schedule. Students engage in course activities as guided by their instructor, not through independent study. Delivery format and assessment methods vary by course, but all require frequent access to e-mail and a web browser. Some courses may require students to arrange for exam proctoring services. Information about proctoring is available at http://sou.edu/distancelearning/students/taking-online-course.html#proctor.

A complete list of online course offerings may be obtained by using the Advanced search feature in the online Class Schedule and selecting Online in the Delivery Method field.

SOU’s distance learners include full- and part-time students, working and retired professionals, community college students, active-duty and retired military, high school students and individuals who want to further their education with a single college course. Web courses are particularly appropriate for students capable of self-directed learning.

All curricula for online courses and degree programs are designed by SOU faculty and are held to the same rigorous academic standards as the University’s on-campus classes. SOU is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, and all online students who complete degree requirements receive the same diploma as campus-based students.

Authorization for Out-of-State Course Delivery

Interstate regulations limit Southern Oregon University’s ability to offer online opportunities to out-of-state students. SOU is currently working to comply with the appropriate authorization procedures in states which regulate the delivery of distance education. Due to high annual fees associated with maintaining compliance in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Minnesota, SOU is not able to accept registrations or applications for online classes or programs from students who reside in these states.

Southern Oregon University is authorized by the Washington Student Achievement Council and meets the requirements and minimum educational standards established for degree-granting institutions under the Degree-Granting Institutions Act. This authorization is subject to periodic review and authorizes Southern Oregon University to offer field placement components for specific degree programs. The Council may be contacted for a list of currently authorized programs. Authorization by the Council does not carry with it an endorsement by the Council of the institution or its programs. Any person desiring information about the requirements of the Act or the applicability of those requirements to the institution may contact the Council at P.O. Box 43430, Olympia WA 98504-3430.
