4 credits An advanced examination of the U.S. society and culture since the mid nineteenth century. Emphasis is placed on themes of race, class, and gender; the development of advertising and consumer culture; the emergence and evolution of mass popular culture; major social movements, especially those in pursuit of civil rights, women’s rights, and gay rights; patterns of daily living; and the role of technological change in transmitting culture.
