SPAN 313B - Medical Spanish for Clinical Staff

4 credits
This course is designed for students with intermediate-low+ proficiency in Spanish (the ability to communicate in straightforward social situations) who would like to further develop their Spanish language skills to more effectively communicate with patients in healthcare settings. More specifically, this course is oriented towards nurses and other clinical providers who will have hand-on contact with patients and engage them directly - assessing vitals, pain levels, talking about tests and follow up. In addition to key vocabulary/terminology students will also practice communicative strategies for making patients feel more comfortable in the exam room, and will delve into cultural competence topics to prepare them to communicate with patients with precision, respect and empathy.

This course has a practical/applied focus, and students are expected to come to class prepared with the material assigned for the day; class time will be focused on “hands on” oral practice set around realistic dialogues that model typical conversations in provider-patient relations. The course will help students develop oral as well as listening skills, and strategies for managing interactions and intercultural considerations. Prerequisite(s): SOU Spanish Placement Level 5 or SPAN 203  with a C- or better.
Grade mode designated on a CRN basis each term. Students should consult current term schedule.
