4 credits
Southern Oregon University is just a few miles from the old boundary between the United States and Mexico, and our two nations have histories that are thoroughly intertwined. This course introduces American students to the long history of Mexico, examining Mesoamerica in the age of indigenous empires, New Spain in the age of European empires, and modern Mexico in the age of independent nation-states. Themes for the class may include the relationship between indigenous and European cultures, the interactions between religious and secular thought, and the struggle to create a modern economy amidst competing traditional, liberal, and socialist models. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing or above or HST 110  or HST 111 .
Graded (A-F) only
