SPED 520b - Law and Policy (added endorsement)

This course is an overview of laws and litigation affecting special education. Public Laws 94-142 (EAHCA), 99-457 (EHA Amendments), 101-476 (IDEA), 105-17 (IDEA ‘97), 108-446 (IDEA 2004), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 will be included, as well as major litigation since 1954. This course includes knowledge of the requirements of the No Child Left Behind legislation and its consequences for special education. Students completing this course at either the elementary or the secondary level of authorization should have a working knowledge of the legally mandated components of a special education program within the confines of federal and state guidelines, be familiar with major case law affecting the provision of educational services to disabled children, and be able to discuss basic legal requirements with colleagues and others in the district.

  Prerequisite(s): Intended for students pursuing the SPED Endorsement Certificate.
