HST 360 - Pilgrims, Pirates, Passports: An Indian Ocean Millennium

4 credits
The Indian Ocean has long carried traders, adventurers, and pilgrims between East African, Middle Eastern, Indian, and SE Asian coasts and beyond. We follow the exchange of religious, scientific, and cultural forms of knowledge, the migration of
enslaved, indentured, and free labor, and the trade in physical commodities within this maritime world. We also examine the arrival of Europeans and the expansion of colonial empires in Asia and Africa as well as their eventual decline. This course explores the histories of diasporic peoples and of syncretic traditions, but also the construction and policing of boundaries, particularly in modernity. Prerequisite(s): Upper-Division Standing or HST 110   or HST 111  or IS 250
Grade mode designated on a CRN basis each term. Students should consult current term schedule.
