ENG 490 - The English Language: An Introduction 4 credits Beginning course in linguistics. Introduces the basic principles of oral and written communication, the sound system of English, dialects, usage problems, competing grammars, development and change in language, problems in semantics, and the acquisition of language and reading skills by young children. Prerequisite(s): ENG 300 or ENG 301 . Junior standing or above. Grade mode designated on a CRN basis each term. Students should consult current term schedule.
