Pre-Engineering Program

The pre-engineering program is part of the Department of Chemistry, Physics, Materials, and Engineering. Pre-engineering program graduates enter such fields as aeronautical, chemical, computer, electrical, electronic, environmental, mechanical, and civil engineering. Common options for the graduates of this program are:

  • Transfer to any Oregon State University (OSU) professional engineering program. At SOU, students can complete most or all of the engineering requirements for admission to their chosen department of the OSU professional engineering program. We work closely with all professional engineering program directors at OSU to ensure a smooth transition. Students typically spend three years at SOU before transferring to engineering programs.

  • Transfer to engineering programs at other universities. Former graduates from this program have continued their engineering studies at OIT, PSU, and California universities.

  • The Physics-Engineering Dual Degree Option. This option allows a student to earn a BS in Physics from SOU and a BS in Engineering from OSU. At SOU, students can complete all of the engineering requirements for admission to their chosen department of the OSU professional engineering program and most of the requirements for the SOU upper division electives for the physics-engineering dual degree option. At OSU, students in this program complete SOU’s physics degree requirements, along with OSU’s professional engineering requirements. Students are eligible to receive a degree from SOU upon completion of the University’s requirements and a minimum of 24 credits of upper division engineering at OSU. This program provides many career options for students interested in physics and engineering. Students typically spend three years at SOU before transferring to engineering programs. See descriptions in the Physics program section for complete details.

  • The Applied Physics or Materials Science degree option at SOU with the eventual option of a Master’s Degree in Materials Science at the University of Oregon (UO). The Applied Physics degree option prepares students for industrial employment or graduate work in applied physics, including nanotechnology, biophysics, medical physics, environmental physics, and geophysics. The Materials Science degree option emphasizes the materials aspects of physical science, including composities, nanoparticles, and polymers. This option is offered in cooperation with the UO Materials Science Institute. Graduates of this option with a GPA above 3.0 are automatically accepted into the Master’s Degree Program at University of Oregon.
