The faculty of the Department of Social Sciences, Policy, and Culture are drawn from academic programs in anthropology, economics, geography, international studies, Native American studies, sociology, and gender, sexuality, and women’s studies. They share a commitment to community and civic engagement and social justice while applying their diverse perspectives to the many challenges facing individuals, society, and the environment.
The Department offers majors and minors in anthropology, economics, international studies, and sociology. It also offers minors in geography, land use planning, Native American Studies, Latin American studies, and gender, sexuality, and women’s studies, as well as certificate programs in applied cultural anthropology, cultural resource management, applied finance and economics, Native American studies, and regional studies and applied research. Details on these programs are located separately in this catalog under their respective academic programs.
Teacher Licensing
Students who would like to teach social studies at the middle or high school level in Oregon public schools must complete at least one course in geography before applying to the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at SOU. Interested students should consult the department chair for an appropriate advisor and the School of Education regarding admission requirements for the MAT program.
