Performing Arts offers concentrated and comprehensive degree programs in Music and Theatre Arts. The curriculum develops creativity and lifelong learning in our students, preparing them for careers and graduate degrees in the performing arts and related fields. In addition to the degree programs in Music and Theatre Arts, Performing Arts offers courses in Dance/Movement Studies and Musical Theatre Studies.
Dance/Movement Studies
Dance/Movement Studies courses provide the skills to enable students from any major to experience a variety of styles and genre of dance and movement with a focus on improvisation and creativity. These elective courses provide enhancement to other University degrees but do not lead to a major, minor, or certificate unto themselves. Dance/Movement courses include: D 182 , D 183 , D 189 , D 192 , D 193 , D 257 , D 258 , D 289 , D 293 , D 295 .
Musical Theatre Studies
Performing Arts offers a suite of courses intended to develop proficiency in all three areas of Musical Theatre–singing, acting, and dance–and are open to all SOU students regardless of their major. These elective courses provide enhancement to other University degrees but do not lead to a major, minor, or certificate unto themselves. Musical Theatre courses include:
Private Voice: MUP 170 , MUP 190
Dance: D 257 , D 189 , D 289 , D 192 , D 293 , D 193 , D 295 , D 258
Acting: TA 246 , TA 281
General Musical Theatre courses: TA 357A , TA 357B , TA 358 , TA 359
Additional courses: in addition to the above recommended courses, students may choose to take other classes to further develop their music and dance skills, for example: for Music–MUS 100, MUS 124, MUS 121, MUS 181, MUS 192; additional private voice lessons–MUP 170, MUP 190, MUP 270, MUP 290; Dance–D 182, D 183.
