Master of Theatre Studies in Production and Design

Theatre Teacher Training Program

The Master of Theatre Studies in Production and Design is a unique and vibrant program tailored specifically for currently employed high school and community college teachers.  The curriculum includes required coursework before and after the two-week summer residency period and throughout the academic school year. The SOU residency portion of the program includes active discussion of production elements, including script analysis, all design elements, stage management, in-depth exploration of all technical areas, hands-on training in production concepts, and practical application of technical processes. Evenings are spent preparing class assignments, working on design and technical projects, and attending plays at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.  The structure of this master’s degree program follows the guidelines set by the Theatre program.

 

Program Requirements:

1.

Possess a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

2.

Be currently serving as a high school or community college theatre teacher, with a minimum of two years of experience.

Admission Procedure:

1.

Complete and submit the SOU application for SOU graduate admission, the application fee and all transcripts of undergraduate and previous graduate work to the Admissions Office by January 15.

2.

Education and theatrical resumés, a one- to two-page statement of purpose, and three letters of professional reference are to be submitted to the SOU Theatre Department by January 15. For further information contact the program director, Deborah Rosenberg, at rosenbergd@sou.edu.

3.

Upon acceptance to SOU as a graduate student, the application packets will be forwarded to the Theatre Department for review and acceptance into the theatre program.

Master’s Thesis

The curriculum culminates in a master’s thesis project consisting of a portfolio reflecting best work samples, a detailed self-evaluation paper, and an oral defense of these documents.
