Certificate in Documentary Production

The Documentary Production Certificate is designed for non-degree-seeking students and traditional degree-seeking students who have a passion for non-fiction media production. The certificate includes hands-on technical training in audio/visual production in both studio and field settings, as well as storytelling and post-production. Students also explore documentary methods, ethics, and conventions.

Documentary Production students must select a concentration in a non-Digital Cinema discipline.

Students with a portfolio that demonstrates technical proficiency and professional experience in target areas may apply to receive credit for prior learning, which may be used to substitute program prerequisites or lower-division course requirements.

Documentary Production Certificate (40 credits)

Program Prerequisites (8 credits)

Per SOU’s Credit for Prior Learning Policy, credits may be earned by students who can demonstrate that they have gained university-level knowledge and skills that articulate with university coursework. The CPL portfolio for Digital Cinema courses involves both a multiple-choice exam and a hands-on demonstration of the applicable skills. Please consult the DCIN Program Coordinator and the Credit for Prior Learning policy .

Disciplinary Concentration (12 credits)

12 credits in any single non-DCIN course prefix*, at least 4 of which must be upper division.

*Excludes PEA, UGS, and USEM prefixes.
