Financial Mathematics, BA or BS

Many sectors of business require strong quantitative analytical training. The Financial Mathematics co-major provides students with training in both areas.

Students should plan their programs carefully with advisors from both the Department of Mathematics and the School of Business.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of a BA/BS in Financial Mathematics, graduates will:

  • Display a depth and breadth of mathematical knowledge in both pure and applied areas.
  • Analyze data and model real-world problems, using technology as appropriate.
  • Provide effective rationale and coherent mathematical arguments to support their conclusions.
  • Learn independently.
  • Effectively communicate complex mathematical concepts orally and in writing.
  • Value their mathematical achievements as well as express an appreciation for mathematics itself.

Requirements for the Major


1. Complete the requirements specified for both mathematics and business as shown below.  No more than one of the math requirements may be met with a grade below C-.  Financial Mathematics co-majors are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA in all business courses.  At least 8 upper division math credits must be taken at SOU.

2. All Financial Mathematics majors must complete a Capstone Experience.  Students must consult their department advisors to determine the exact nature of the capstone experience.

Optional: 3+1 and 4+1 Pathway to MBA Program


The 3+1 Pathway to the Evening MBA at Southern Oregon University (SOU) provides undergraduate students with a streamlined opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s degree and an MBA in a shorter timeframe while paying undergraduate tuition rates. This program is available to students enrolled in select SOU undergraduate degrees, enabling them to take graduate-level courses during their undergraduate studies that count toward both their bachelor’s degree and MBA credit requirements. Students pursuing a BS/BA in Financial Mathematics are eligible to participate in this Pathway.
