Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of a BA in English, graduates will be able to:

  • Apply literary, rhetorical, and linguistic theory to a wide range of texts.
  • Write analytically, critically, and persuasively.
  • Communicate effectively in writing and speaking, in academic and professional contexts.
  • Conduct research that involves locating, using, and documenting primary and secondary sources.

Requirements for the Major


 Exceptions to the following requirements may be presented to the program chair for consideration.

1. Fulfill baccalaureate degree requirements.


2. Complete prerequisites.


3. Complete the core courses, as well as the electives.


4. GPA Requirements:


Maintain a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA and a minimum 2.5 GPA in English and writing courses. Earn a grade of C- or better in ENG 301 .

Core Courses

Upper-division electives


Upper division ENG courses, 48 credits total

  • Up to 8 credits from other course prefixes (e.g., 300- or 400-level non-studio CW courses, DCIN 362 , EMDA 302  or EMDA 320 , NAS 331 ) may be applied to the major as upper-division electives with English faculty approval.

  • A combined maximum of 8 credit hours of ENG 405 , ENG 407 , and ENG 409  may be applied to the major as upper-division electives.
