The creative writing program is designed to give students a working acquaintance with contemporary directions in poetry, fiction, and cross-genre writing, as well as providing them with a solid background in influential concepts of modern poetics and narrative theory. The primary goal of this program is to maintain a balanced emphasis on theory and practice and to supplement creative exercises with assigned reading in representative traditions.

Requirements
- WR 330 - Fiction Writing 4 credits
- WR 341 - Poetry Writing 4 credits
- WR 350 - Topics in Nonfiction Essay 4 credits
- Two 400-level creative writing courses 8 credits
- 400-level literature course 4 credits
- Upper division writing or literature course (or humanities elective as approved by an advisor) 4 credits
- WR 420 - Beyond the Workshop 2 credits *
* (4 credits of WR 420 taken in two consecutive quarters in the same academic year) - WR 400 - Capstone I 2 credits
- WR 401 - Capstone II 2 credits
Note: Before being admitted into 300-level Creative Writing workshops (WR 330, WR 341, WR 350), in addition to existing prerequisites, students are required to submit a writing sample of 8-10 pages in length, along with a cover letter. The writing sample and cover letter will be reviewed by a committee composed of three active Creative Writing faculty members.
