Studio Art Lower Division (BA, BS, and BFA degrees)

Introductory Foundations courses equip students to work collaboratively as well as independently on projects that emphasize creative development, critical thinking, and self-disciplined studio habits relevant to work in all media. Focusing on creativity, versatility, and conceptual rigor over technical specialization, the Foundations curriculum combines hands-on experience of art making with practical, theoretical, and historical backgrounds on artistic production. Additionally, the introductory art history course sequence (ARTH 204 , ARTH 205 , ARTH 206 ) introduces students to a wide range of historical and contemporary perspectives on art and visual culture. Throughout first year courses, students are encouraged to consider the physical and cultural context of their artworks and the work of others as central to an informed understanding of art making and visual literacy. (16 credits) The lower division studio requirements provide students with a conceptual and technical foundation in various art media and expose students to a variety of approaches to the creative process. Studio Concentration Areas: Ceramics, Digital Media, Sculpture, Painting and Drawing, Photography, and Printmaking ART HISTORY (8 credits) ARTH electives: 8 credits of 300- or 400-level (many upper division art history courses also fulfill University Studies Integration course requirements) STUDIO (24 credits) Studio concentration: 12 credits in one studio area Studio electives: 12 credits in any combination of studio courses - ART 496 - BA/BS Studio Art Capstone 4 credits (Capstone in concentration area)
