The BA, BS, and BFA degrees focus art and art history courses with a mix of liberal arts and professional courses to prepare students for careers in the creative arts. The BA/BS curriculum allows students to combine a broad range of interests in other fields of study with their studies in art. The BFA degree focuses on studio art practice and critique. All of our degree options are excellent preparation for continuing study at the graduate level, or for pursuing a career as a creative professional.

Requirements for the Art Major
1.
Fulfill baccalaureate degree requirements. 2.
All students declare a major before completing 90 credits. Students interested in the art major must first complete a pre-major declaration form and meet with the department chair for initial advising and assignment of an academic advisor. Applications and appointments with the chair are made in the department office. 3.
Students must complete requirements for a studio art or art history option. Lower division requirements provide students with a foundation of technical skill, visual literacy, and knowledge of historical and cultural perspectives basic to the study of art. Entering Freshmen should complete the Art History (ARTH 204 , ARTH 205 , ARTH 206 ) sequence in their first year; students pursuing a studio art emphasis should also enroll in Foundations (ART 101 , ART 102 , ART 103 ). 4.
While completing lower division requirements, students should consult with their faculty advisor to choose a degree option (see the BA/BS sections) and plan their course of study. Students interested in the BFA degree must first plan a BA/BS degree option; admission to the BFA is limited, and not all students will be admitted to the program. (See advising plan below.) 5.
Successfully complete a mid-program review (ART 300 or ARTH 300 ) prior to enrolling in 400-level upper division department courses. (See Art Mid-Program Review section below.) 6.
Complete degree requirements for the major. 7.
Maintain a 3.0 GPA for all SOU coursework in the major for BA/BS degree; 3.25 for BFA degree. 8.
Complete the capstone course requirements. (See Capstone section below.) Advising and Advising Plans
Students must have an up-to-date annual advising plan on file in the office. Annual advising plans must be approved by the student’s academic advisor (forms are available in the department office). It is the student’s responsibility to understand university and departmental programs and requirements and to make meaningful progress toward completion of degree. Faculty advisors will assist students with achieving academic goals and assessing career options. Art Capstone
During their senior year all art majors will complete a capstone that integrates their goals and interests and applies the skills and knowledge of their studies in a career-oriented project. The capstone project is designed in collaboration with the capstone advisor, faculty and professionals in the field of study as needed, and can be a body of work, an internship, a research project or an independent project. In the capstone course students will be introduced to professional practices preparing them for careers in their field of choice. Students will document their final projects meeting professional standards, with select capstone projects being archived in the University’s Hannon Library. |
