Lower division requirements for the BA, BS, and BFA degrees are identical.

Foundations

Introductory Foundations courses equip students to work collaboratively as well as independently on projects that emphasize creative development, critical thinking, and self-disciplined studio habits relevant to work in all media. Focusing on creativity, versatility, and conceptual rigor over technical specialization, the Foundations curriculum combines hands-on experience of art making with practical, theoretical, and historical backgrounds on artistic production. Additionally, the introductory art history course sequence (ARTH 204  , ARTH 205  , ARTH 206  ) introduces students to a wide range of historical and contemporary perspectives on art and visual culture. Throughout first year courses, students are encouraged to consider the physical and cultural context of their artworks and the work of others as central to an informed understanding of art making and visual literacy.
