COMM 218 - Comics: Culture & Politics 4 credits Long regarded as a marginal art form, comic books and graphic novels have emerged as platforms for potent political expression, and the foundation of billion-dollar media franchises. This course examines comic art relying on the theoretical and methodological approaches by which mass media have been formally studied in the 20th and 21st centuries, including media effects, audience reception, cultural studies, feminism, ethnic studies, political economy, and more. Students explore diverse comic genres including superheroes, manga, autobiography, and others. Approved for University Studies, Strand F. Grade mode designated on a CRN basis each term.
