ENG 490 - The English Language: An Introduction


4 credits
Beginning course in linguistics. Introduces the basic principles of oral and written communication, the sound system of English, dialects, usage problems, competing grammars, development and change in language, problems in semantics, and the acquisition of language and reading skills by young children. Grading option designated on a CRN basis each term. Students should consult current term schedule. Restricted to Junior standing and above. Prerequisite(s): ENG 300 .
