The Master of Science in Environmental Education program-an NAAEE accredited program-has been intentionally designed to create capable and skilled leaders through field-based experiences and engaging, rigorous scientific coursework. Students learn to teach through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion while developing standards-aligned K-12 curricula and creating environmental educational programs. Applying a strong science background, students collaborate in a cohort model to design, market, deliver, manage, and assess several residential and non-residential place-based programs in the rich Klamath/Siskiyou bioregion.

The collaborative partnerships with the National Park Service and Bureau of Land Management, nonprofit organizations, and other local, state, and federal organizations provide content-rich opportunities for students to utilize internships to individualize their program and craft their professional journey. Program alumni have secured leadership roles directing nonprofits, teaching in formal and informal settings, working with governmental and nongovernmental organizations, and serving as interpretive naturalists and educators in museums, nature centers, and parks.

To join the program, applicants need either a degree in science or a strong background in natural sciences, with coursework approved by the Program Coordinator of the environmental education program. Application instructions are found on the Environmental Education website (https://enviroed.sou.edu/apply/). Application materials include the graduate application to SOU, a resume/CV, a letter of intent, official GRE scores, official transcripts, and three letters of recommendation. Applications are reviewed in January and April. Graduate assistantships are available, and candidates must apply by the January deadline. The 18-month program begins in the second summer session and most students complete in December of the following year if no additional options are pursued.
