Theatre Practice Requirement

Students must complete at least 10 credits of TA 255 - Theatre Practice  and 10 credits of TA 455 - Theatre Practice .

Full time Theatre majors must enroll in either TA 255 (prior to Junior standing) or TA 455 (Junior standing or above) every term unless excused by their advisor.

For both the TA 255 and TA 455 requirements: students may be excused from Theatre Practice for a term after consulting with their faculty advisor in the term prior to the requested absence. The SOU Theatre Handbook lists typical situations that will likely result in a successful absence excuse petition. Students earning 6 credits in two consecutive terms may, with advisor consultation, be excused for a term from mandatory Theatre Practice enrollment. Students are excused from Theatre Practice while enrolled in TA 400 - Capstone, or while engaged in a departmentally approved internship.

Capstone Preparation

Each year until the year they enroll in the Capstone Workshop (TA 400A ) and Capstone Experience (TA 400B ), all Theatre BA and BS students are required to enroll in TA 155 - Capstone Preparation  for the spring term.

Continuation as a major in any of the degree programs is contingent upon a yearly evaluation. The criteria used to determine whether students shall be retained or dropped from the major include:

Complete the Theatre Practice requirement:

• TA 262 - Costume Design I 4 credits
• TA 442 - Theatre Sound Design 4 credits
• TA 445 - Lighting Design: Creating the Aesthetic 4 credits

Complete all of the following:

• TA 400A - Theatre Capstone Workshop 1 credit
• TA 400B - Capstone Experience 1 credit
• Three Courses in Dramatic Literature - 9-12 credits required
• Theatre electives - 14 credits

Complete 3 of the following:

• TA 240 - Stagecraft 4 credits
• TA 242 - Theatre Sound 4 credits
• TA 245 - Stage Lighting 4 credits
• TA 249 - Costume Fundamentals 4 credits
• TA 333 - Stage Properties 4 credits
• TA 343 - Scene Painting 4 credits
