In place of a non-business minor, an approved certificate, or a one-year study abroad program, a student may select a pre-approved interdepartmental course grouping with at least 24 credits, including at least 12 credits of upper division coursework drawn from one of the school’s established course grouping lists. Courses taken for University Studies may also be counted toward this requirement.

School of Business students who participate in an SOU-approved study abroad program may receive credit toward the International Perspective Enrichment Area or Cultural Diversity Enrichment Area if they are enrolled fulltime in courses that are pre-approved by the School of Business international study advisor.

Following are the four approved enrichment groupings:

International Perspective Enrichment Area

This area is for students interested in expanding their understanding of other regions and cultures.

Required Courses (8 credits)

COMM 200 - Communication Across Cultures 4 credits
IS 350 - World Politics 4 credits
or
PS 350 - World Politics 4 credits

Electives

Select at least 16 credits from the following:

HST 351 - History of Latin America 4 credits each
HST 352 - History of Latin America 4 credits each
IS 250 - International Scene 4 credits
IS 320 - Introduction to the International Economy 4 credits
COMM 460C - Culture, Identity, and Communication 4 credits
SOC 345 - Sociology of Globalization 4 credits
Other courses may be approved by an advisor.

Cultural Diversity Enrichment Area

This area is for students wishing to increase their knowledge and understanding of ethnic groups and women in the United States.

Required Courses (8 credits)

SOC 204 - The Sociological Imagination 4 credits
ANTH 213 - Cultural Anthropology: Perspectives on Humanity 4 credits

Electives

Select at least 16 credits from the following:

GSWS 201 - Introduction to Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies 4 credits

Language and Culture Enrichment Area

This area is for students interested in acquiring conversational language skills and learning about a different culture. The requirements below must be attained in one language. A student’s first language may not be used. (Note: If a required 201, 202, or 203 class is waived by your language placement exam, you may substitute an approved upper division course in that language in order to complete the required 24 credits.)

French

Complete:

FR 201 - Intermediate French Language and Culture I 4 credits
FR 202 - Intermediate French Language and Culture II 4 credits
FR 203 - Intermediate French Language and Culture III 4 credits
and a minimum of 12 approved upper division credits in French.

German

Complete:

GL 201 - Intermediate German Language and Culture I 4 credits each
GL 202 - Intermediate German Language and Culture II 4 credits each
GL 203 - Intermediate German Language and Culture III 4 credits each
and a minimum of 12 approved upper division credits in German.

Spanish

Complete:

SPAN 201 - Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture I 4 credits
SPAN 202 - Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture II 4 credits
SPAN 203 - Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture III 4 credits
and a minimum of 12 approved upper division credits in Spanish.

Marketing Communication Enrichment Area

This area is for students wishing to increase their communication knowledge and skills.
