The military science program is part of the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Leadership. The Military Science program offers both an Army ROTC program leading to a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and a minor in military science.
Students are not required to be enrolled in the Army ROTC program to take military science courses and may pursue a military science minor without military obligation. The Military Science program offers a varied class schedule that is open to all students. The Military Science program also offers a series of optional adventure outings and on-campus activities during the school year. These include orienteering, rappelling, sports programs and social activities.
1. Army ROTC Program
The Military Science program offers a two, three, and four year Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program designed to develop future officers in the areas of leadership, management, public policy, national security, military history and military skills.
The Army ROTC program consists of one military science course per term along with scheduled leadership laboratories and field training. The four-year program is divided into two parts: the basic course and the advanced course. A variety of scholarships are available to students who wish to enroll in Army ROTC.
ROTC Basic Course
The ROTC basic course is usually taken in the freshman and sophomore years. No military commitment is incurred during this time and students may withdraw at any time through the end of the second year. The first year consists of one-credit introductory courses each term. The second year consists of two-credit courses with instruction on organizational leadership theories.
Uniforms, necessary military science textbooks, and materials are furnished without cost to students. After completing the basic course students who have demonstrated officer potential, have met physical and scholastic standards, and agree to contract are eligible to enroll in the advanced course.
ROTC Advanced Course
The ROTC advanced course is normally taken in the final two years of college and consists of a challenging program of military science, multi-disciplinary studies and practical field exercises. The advanced course requires a paid five-week internship held during the summer between the junior and senior years. This camp trains and assesses students in the application of leadership principles and theories.
All students in the advanced course receive uniforms, necessary military science textbooks and a living allowance of up to $5,000 each school year. Upon completion of the advanced course, students are commissioned as Second Lieutenants in the US Army.
Second Lieutenants have the option of serving in the US Army on active duty, in the National Guard or in the Reserves for a minimum of four years. Several special programs are available for students who have previous ROTC training or active military service. These programs allow for part- or full-placement credit for the basic course. In addition, a program is available for simultaneous participation in both Army ROTC and the Army National Guard or Army Reserve.
Applying for the Program
SOU students enroll in military science courses during registration in the same manner as for other university classes. There is no advance application needed for the freshman or sophomore classes.
Students need to contact the Military Science program to enroll in the Army ROTC program and to receive information on the requirements of the program. Contact the program at 541-552-6309.
Financial Assistance
All enrolling students have the opportunity to compete for two, three, and four-year scholarships. These scholarships cover all tuition, laboratory, book fees, and provide a monthly subsistence allowance during the school year. Scholarship applications are processed by the Military Science program.
2. Military Science Minor
The SOU Military Science minor provides a broad academic approach drawing on Political Science, History, Communication, International Studies, Geography, Education, Psychology, Criminology, Psychology and Philosophy as well as Military Science. It is designed to produce an effective understanding of the political, social and geographical factors that shape modern military policy, tactics and strategy. Although not required, the military science minor is preferred for all students enrolled in the Army ROTC program.
