SOC 347 - Religion and Politics in the Middle East 4 credits Provides students with an essential background for understanding the interaction of religion and politics in the Middle East. Explores the cultural and historical context in which political Islam emerged. Analyzes Islam both in theory and practice and its effect on political, individual, and family social domains. Specific topics and issues may include tensions between tradition and modernity in the context of human rights and democracy, the role of women, the Salman Rushdie case, and coverage of Islam in Western media.Prerequisite(s): SOC 204 .
