The Bachelor of Music is a professional degree program with a disciplinary foundation oriented toward advanced development of general musicianship allied with competence in an area of specialization. The program’s focus is to prepare students to express the highest level of musical artistry and creativity and for careers in the performing arts. Students who seek the Bachelor of Music degree will specialize in one of two areas: performance or music education.

Requirements for the Major:
All music majors must: 1.
Fulfill baccalaureate degree requirements. 2.
Pass a new student audition on their major instrument. Students will have an opportunity to audition for the department during the department and scholarship auditions which take place in February, department auditions on the Friday before the first week of school in Fall term, or during department juries at the end of each term. Students are allowed three attempts to pass the new student audition. 3.
Pass all sequential music theory and aural skills courses with a grade of C or better to continue. 4.
Take MUS 292 until they have successfuly completed the piano proficiency exam. 5.
All music majors taking applied lessons (MUP 190 - 490) are required to perform before a jury at the end of each term. 6.
Pass the continuation exam (MUS 300 ) after the completion of all lower division course work for the Music degree. 7.
Students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all music courses throughout their studies to receive the Bachelor of Music. Any student who falls below will be placed on a one term probation; if the minimum GPA does not increase to above 3.0, the student will be moved to the Bachelor of Arts or Sciences in Music degree program. 8.
Pass ten terms of the 0-credit, P/NP Convocations/Concerts course. For transfer students, the number of terms required depends on the number of applied music credits transferred. 9.
Complete the capstone experience (MUS 400 ). Students should consult their department advisor to determine the exact nature of their capstone experience. 10.
Complete the requirements for either the Performance or Music Education concentration. Music Core
(74 credits for Music Education Concentration, 92 credits for Performance Concentration) The core program for all Bachelor of Music students is as follows: Applied Lesson Requirements
Education Concentration: Students take three terms of each for at least 2 credits per term for a total of at least 6 credits of each. Performance Concentration: Students take three terms of each for 4 credits per term for a total of 12 credits of each. Large Ensemble
Education Concentration students are required to take 12 credits, 1 per term Performance Concentration students are required to take 6 credits, 1 per term Select from the following: Bachelor of Music Concentrations
Bachelor of Music students must choose one of two areas of concentration: Performance Concentration, or Music Education Concentration. Performance Concentration
The Performance Concentration requires an additional 29-30 credits beyond the Music Core: - Additional Ensembles (12 credits): Select from MUS 384 , MUS 385 , MUS 386 , MUS 387 , MUS 388 , MUS 394 , MUS 395 , MUS 396 , MUS 397 , MUS 398 .
- MUS 350 - Junior Recital 1 credit
- MUS 411 - Special Topics in Pedagogy 3 credits
- MUS 412 - Special Topics in Literature 3 credits
- MUS 450 - Senior Recital 1 credit
- Advanced Theory (6 credits): Select from MUS 440 , MUS 441 , MUS 442 , MUS 443 , MUS 444 , MUS 445 .
- Advanced History (3 or 4 credits): Select from MUS 311 or MUS 460 .
