IS 380C - Making Modern India (1700-1947)

Course explores the history of South Asia (especially what is now India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh) from 1700-1947. Beginning with the decline of the Mughal Empire, we examine the rise of colonialism and its wide-reaching impact. We study indigenous forms of anti-colonial dissent including Gandhian non-violent resistance and the rise of popular nationalism. The course engages with key scholarly debates and primary sources including colonial documents, letters and speeches by Indian activists, photographs and video footage. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing or above (Cross-listed HST 366 )
