IS 380A - Postcolonial South Asia (1947-present)

This course examines trajectories of democracy and authoritarianism in post-Partition South Asia. We explore the colonial inheritances of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and other South Asian states, as well as notions of citizenship, national identity, and articulations of secularism and state religion in the context of these diverse societies. We will also examine questions of gender, caste, ethnicity, linguistic, and regional difference, and consider strategies of economic development, Cold War politics, and the region’s role in the “War on Terror” after 9/11 (Cross-listed HST 367 .
