VISION STATEMENT

The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University empowers and entertains people through the enjoyment of the arts.

MISSION STATEMENT

The Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University reflects, produces, and presents the work of artists from the university and the greater community in Southern Oregon, the nation, and the globe.  This will be done through performances, exhibitions, lectures, festivals, special events, and partnerships with internal and external arts organizations of the university.

FOCUS

The Center is the production wing of the School of Arts & Communication as well as a partner with artists and arts organizations that ascribe to the OCA mission. The unique setting of the Oregon Center for the Arts at SOU serves as a creative catalyst for the mixture of students, educators, artists, and professional arts organizations. This diverse combination will infuse the Oregon arts landscape with the presentation of artistic excellence and entertainment.  The OCA serves as the public face for performances, presentations, and exhibitions of the School of Arts & Communication and the university with support from the Center’s patrons and donors.

ARTISTIC COMPONENTS

The Schneider Museum of Art

The Schneider Museum of Art is a vital force that stimulates inspiration and curiosity through engagement with living artists. Serving both an academic community and global audiences, the Museum creates a diverse and accessible environment by curating innovative exhibitions, imaginative programming, a distinguished collection, lively discourse, and learning.  The Museum’s programming includes a nascent visiting artist-in-residence program with artists teaching and creating original works on-site (VAST).  These are presented in the Museum and provide unique opportunities for student involvement.  Strong collaborative programs are developed with all areas of the arts to engage students and present works of innovation and exploration.

Chamber Music Concerts

Chamber Music Concerts (CMC) is a concert presenter dedicated to bringing world-class chamber music to Southern Oregon for the enjoyment, enrichment, and education of the region.  In addition to concerts at the SOU Music Recital Hall, CMC presents educational outreach programs, which reach diverse groups throughout the community as well as SOU students, faculty, and the community.

Tutunov Piano Series

The Tutunov Piano Series is a concert presenter dedicated to hosting world-class pianists and on occasion accompanying musicians for the enjoyment, enrichment, and education of the community.  The Series contains six to eight visiting artists each year who perform and present master classes for students in piano.

Oregon Fringe Festival

Each spring, the Oregon Fringe Festival presents a multi-day event celebrating bold, innovative, and outrageous creativity in the arts.  It is a boundary-breaking platform for free expression of SOU students, faculty, and invited guest artists.  It celebrates unconventional art and unconventional space. The festival is student-produced (only one in the world) and is a crossroads for emerging artists and professional practitioners to engage with each other’s creative work.  The festival is aligned with the rich history of The Fringe, an international movement exploring our innate creative spirit.

Oregon Arts Medallion

In 2017 the Oregon Center for the Arts at Southern Oregon University created the Oregon Arts Medallion to recognize and honor Oregon philanthropists who have significantly contributed to and invested in the creative culture in the State of Oregon. The award is presented biennially at a special function in honor of the recipient. The mission of the OCA includes the training, nurturing, and presenting of Oregon artists as well as honoring those individuals who support the arts.

JPR/OCA One World Performance Series

JPR and the Oregon Center for the Arts at SOU have teamed up to present the One World Performance Series - an eclectic mix of both established and emerging musicians touring the West Coast. Featuring some of the top artists touring the West Coast with the goal of bringing people together to share the universal language of music.

ShakespeareAMERICA

ShakespeareAMERICA is an accessible forum for practitioners, scholars, teachers, students, and audiences that explores and documents new and provocative thinking about the world and works of William Shakespeare through the prism of an American perspective and shares its discoveries through multiple 21st-century platforms.

Community Arts Partnerships

Another aspect of the Center is the close working relationships and partnerships that exist between the University and community arts organizations including Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Britt Music and Arts Festivals, Ashland International Film Festival, Rogue Valley Symphony, Southern Oregon Repertory Singers, Ashland Gallery Association, Ashland New Plays Festival, and Rogue Valley Symphonic Band. Community arts organizations provide professional/semi-professional arts experiences for SOU students.  There is a long history of collaboration between SOU and the partner organizations that have created for the region and the state a rich cultural environment.
